Lorrie Klemons – Caring for a Son with Two Concurrent Life-Threatening Conditions

In March, 2016, all of Lorrie’s professional experience, patient advocacy and best mothering strategies were called into action when her son was diagnosed with two concurrent life threatening conditions. She spent nine months at his side, advocating and caregiving for him. While she’s happy to report that her son’s story has a very happy ending, this experience impassioned her even more in the work she does, as- suring that every patient’s voice is heard.

Lorrie received her BSN degree from the Hunter College- Bellevue School of Nursing in NYC in 1972 and her MSN from the same school in 1974. She spent the first three decades of her career in nursing and nursing education, obsessed with making sure patients received the nursing care they deserved. In 2010, she embarked on a new journey to help patients, particularly senior healthcare consumers, find their voices to become empowered in the healthcare setting. In 2011, she became the Wellness Nurse at the Levine Jewish Community Center in Charlotte, NC, working with the adult and senior populations. This is where her passion for se- nior advocacy became part of her life’s mission. This passion was recognized with her winning the North Carolina Agency On Aging Excellence in Care Award in 2016.

Lorrie was a founding partner of Patient Action in 2010, a company that promoted patient empowerment and advocacy. She then created Klemons HealthCare Consulting, a company which more specifically promotes senior advocacy and empowerment. Through Klemons HealthCare Consulting, Lorrie provides staff development to make sure members of the healthcare team encourage, embrace and support such advocacy and empowerment.

She is the co-author of the book READY…SET…ADVOCATE! Your Step by Step Guide to Patient Empowerment available at amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. She is a professional speaker who is passionate about empowering all healthcare consumers with the ability to be their own patient advocate or an advocate for some- one they care about. Lorrie is the facilitator of a private self-help Facebook Group, I AM MY PARENT’S CAREGIVER Charlotte Metro and invites you to join it. She created a booklet entitled ALL ABOUT ME which is a legacy gift an aging person can create for future generations and/or caregivers. In 2019 she became certified as a Dementia Practitioner so she could better handle the needs of that unique population.
