Erika Rendon – www.comfortkeepers.ca/barrie Erika Rendon is a Senior Home Care agency owner in Barrie ON Canada. Erika was born in Colombia South America and was introduced to the senior population by her own family and in specific her grandmother who was the primary, 24hr caregiver to her grandfather that had advanced Parkinson’s. I spent days assisting my grandmother with all of my grandfather’s showers, meal times and enjoyed the special bond that I had with my grandfather up until the time he died. As a young person I recognized the desire to help our seniors in need and in particular the 24hr caregivers that had limited support and resources in their community and within the family circle as well. Erika went to the University of York, where she received a degree in English and a minor in Spanish. Seeing as this was just a minor stepping stone in my life, she decided to go back to College and pursue work as a Social Service Worker specializing in Geriatric care. Soon after graduation she found a career working in Long Term Care as a Social Worker and as an Recreational Therapist. She spent 4 years working in the private sector and moved on to work for Sunrise Senior Living as an Assisted Living Coordinator and soon thereafter was promoted to Reminiscence Coordinator and also as the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Coordinator for that Region. Connie Siskowski, RN, PhD – www.aacy.org Connie was educated at Johns Hopkins, Montclair State and New York University, and she obtained her PhD in 2004 from Lynn University. Connie never expected her doctoral research to uncover the high prevalence of family health situations and concomitant caregiving with detrimental academic effects upon children in Palm Beach County. Her broad background in healthcare and dedication to diminishing caregiver struggles led to the 1998 establishment of a nonprofit organization which has transformed itself to become what is now the American Association for Caregiving Youth (AACY), headquartered in Boca Raton, FL. AACY includes the Caregiving Youth Project of Palm Beach County, the first US program to support the hidden population of child caregivers, a growing affiliate network and the Caregiving Youth Institute. The needs of these children are beyond the purview of any one system so AACY integrates healthcare, education and the community (body, mind and spirit) to provide a strong foundation for the youth and their families. Her talk will include aspects of each of these systems and link the importance of wraparound support to reduce stress on youth caregivers and their families. The goal is for caregiving youth to have personal and academic success as they continue their journey to adulthood.
